A few days ago I mentioned the scrub wild cherry in our back yard that was split by the storm on Wednesday afternoon. Here's a shot of the tree - split vertically right in the middle:
We don't know how it happened. There doesn't appear to be any burn marking which we thought we'd see with a lightening strike. We've had higher winds and the tree fared OK, so this damage is a mystery. The tree has always leaned, but now it's resting on a part of our grand old ash, the place where the ash lost a big section in Hurricane Isabel.
Here's a closeup of the damage:
That tree is out of here as soon as Garden Man can get it out. While it might survive, it's a scrubby tree and I don't want to invite disease. I really don't want it to succumb and fall on my pricey litte baby yews or my oak leaf hydrangeas. Wild cherry makes lovely firewood, and that's what this tree is destined to be.
Now to the weather. DARN it's hot. Or should I say it's DARN hot? It is. Hot. Yesterday's high was 95 humid degrees. Today looks to be about the same. We're stuck with a high pressure system that is unaware it's worn out its welcome. While my basil is in heaven, the rest of my plants and especially the newly planted ones aren't so happy. Looks like we'll get a break a week from now. Ouch. We went from a lovely spring into the dead of summer in two days. I want spring back.
