I thought this little gem might be Common Cinquefoil, Potentilla simplex. I saw it during our walk on an interior path on Sears Island, ME. There is something incredibly pleasing about its perfect simplicity, don't you think?
After looking at many images online, I'm reconsidering whether or not this is cinquefoil. In my North Woods Wildflowers, Common Cinquefoil is the only flower looking remotely like this one. This plant's distinctive heart-shaped petals, I thought, should make identification easy. Now I'm wishing I had paid more attention to the foliage.
Can you identify this plant?
Hi Kim, The flowers look like a potentilla to me...but the leaves are throwing me off! Even relatives of it don't quite match! But what ever it's id...it sure is lovely with those heart shaped sweet buttery yellow petals! gail

I love cinquefoil...I have some and I not sure what type but they are similar. Their 'hearts' are quite sweet;-) I have a bunch of photos from this summer in Maine, too...I just haven't posted them yet!!
